Cliveden Spa, Berkshire

Cliveden is undoubtedly one of the National Trust’s most treasured properties. When it was converted in the 1980s it also became what is arguably the world’s most remarkable country house hotel.

Renovating the spa was therefore an exciting and challenging project. AEON had to create a state-of-the-art spa complex for the 21st century, and yet do so within the historical context of this classic walled garden environment. AEON retained Nancy Astor’s outdoor pool and the pagoda her husband built, but trebled the size of the spa without going beyond the building’s original footprint. The new structure has, as before, one storey above ground, but with the addition of subterranean area that also links directly into the hotel itself.

The result is a sophisticated contemporary spa, offering a wealth of modern treatments, which is knitted seamlessly into the rich fabric of a remarkable historic building and adverse site-specific constraints.
