Thornbury Castle Spa, Gloucestershire The brief was to create a modern day spa within the 500 year old walls of this Tudor castle. This was complicated by the fact that the walls, far from being ruined, were actually never completed. AEON created, along an 80 metre stretch of the existing walls, a strikingly contemporary structure of cantilevered concrete, glass, steel and wood. The roof takes its inspiration from the kind of wooden latticework construction that would have been used in the early 1500’s before the emergence of the Renaissance ideas flowed into Britain. AEON took traditional elements from the original architecture of the building and created a journey through a number of different treatment rooms. This has involved us in carefully utilising the existing niches and first floor openings within the walls to produce an unusual, but contemporary, spa experience. The effect is startlingly modern, yet entirely in harmony with the unusual historical context. |
